at this cap obama was talking about. we wanted to ask is there a specific segment in the population responsible for widening this cap or is this a current running through the economy? 18-24 years old 265 and up. these folks see an increase of the income gap if you compare with 20 years ago with today. there are a number of reasons why. you can put it into three different categories. first is demographic. this is a different country that was years ago. if you look at the number of immigrants with enter the country. a million or so every single year. they tend to make a little bit less than the native population. secondly, increase the amount of women who are the main breadwinner's for their households. one thing worth noting here is women still make less on average than men. dennis: it brings numbers down making the gap look worse than it otherwise would be. dennis: custody question, why is it worth the widening gap among 35-44-year-olds. >> is one thing about this population. these are the folks who are just about to enter their prime earning years. i am in this group. 40s-50s earni

-- verifyble. when this bill was being talked about again, back in 2009, shortly after mr. obama became our 44th president, it was estimated that there was something like 47 million people in this country, mr. speaker, who through no fault of their own except couldn't afford it didn't have health insurance. well, when you really go through those numbers and i have a book with me that i'm going to reference and i want to give proper attribution, the name of the book is "the top 10 myths of american health care: a citizen's guide." maybe it could be a patient's guide. and this is written by sali pipes -- sally pipes. and she talks about in this book, she talks about that 47 million. something like 15 million of hose 47 million make more than $50,000 a year. indeed, some make more than $75,000 a year, mr. speaker. and they've just decided that they don't want health insurance, that they will pay as they go. and there's nothing wrong with that. i don't advise it. i think everybody should at least have catastrophic coverage. but be that as it may, this is america. we have to insist on enjoying our

the obama administration has bide season going to basically be dealing with this region a lot more than we've seen. i think he's going to be the guy to try to talk sense to these different leaders, to try to get the south koreans to deal bet we are the japanese and to try to get both of them to interact in a more constructive way with china. there's a lot of resentment that's built up over thousands of years here culturally, but what joe biden is trying to bring a message is their prosperity regionally is on the line if they don't find a way to fundamentally begin working together. and he really -- if you see this guy and you commented on it before, he's such a natural politician and he goes right to the human core of these leaders. in asia, that's not an easy trick. so joe biden is pushing the human relationships and i suspect he'll be the guy to manage shinn ping for some time. >> something you don't see normally, political skills. pete clemons traveling with vice president biden. thank you, sir. the white house insists the white house is not trying to contain china, just simply playing

this is what president obama called the defining challenge of our time in this economics talk yesterday. the fact is, the restaurant industry noted that the majority of the jobs our economy is creating are in these low payment fields like restaurant and retail. these aren't team jobs if they ever were. now tens of millions of adult americans spend their time cycling through these careers, these jobs. at $9 an hour, they're not sustainable. so what the fast food workers are calling for is a raise in pay and sit down with the industry for negotiationing a plan to transition to a higher wage, a higher productivity business model. >> how does the industry afford it? at the end of the day, higher wages is going to mean -- i mean, it's going to feed through and we're going to get higher cost of food, aren't we? >> so the road map for how to do this is what's happened with other similar industries in the u.s. in the big cities, they've been given more money through a similar model. there is a huge amount of revenue in the restaurant industry, but it's being skimmed off on the corporate chains.

we've been talking about there's an enormous push behind getting some kind of a living wage or minimum wage passed. nothing much is happening in washington. president obama was in favor of a $9 minimum wage. now in favor of a $10.10-minute mum wage. not a lot going on in congress. in the states you can see there's a lot more going on. california recently passed a bill to raise the minimum wage from $8 to $10. the highest in the country. district of columbia they are about to pass, i think, legislation that would take it up over $11. doing this in concert with two maryland counties because you want to avoid the factor if you raise the minimum wage in one place, walmart threatened not to go to washington. this is a controversial subject. in the context the bottom fifth of american families have lost 15% of their real income since the year 1999. these are hurting people. >> sam stein, this is a central issue from extending unemployment benefits -- you know, progressives have always been pushing for higher minimum wages, conservatives have been talking about keeping the minimum
